"Although I have always enjoyed creating art, I chose veterinary medicine as my career path because I was drawn to the human-animal bond, and to the challenges of daily problem solving. I started my serious art journey immediately after my retirement from practice. I quickly realized there were surprisingly similar aspects between veterinary medicine and art. I celebrate the bond I get to now form between certain pieces of art (both mine and others), and I face constant problems to solve every time I get in front of a canvas. There is so much to learn, I will never know enough."
Irene Schomacker is a Kansas based artist exploring impressionism in landscapes, animals, portraits, and more. Her stylized artwork focuses on capturing the essence of a place and the personality in a portrait using an abundance of color and texture. Her brushwork is lively and energetic, adding another dimension to her painting.
Irene began her study of art early with some classes at the Kansas City Art Institute, culminating in private lessons with Charles Stanley Lewis, who was on the faculty of KCAI. Multiple art classes at Kansas State University allowed her to stay sane through the rigors of studying veterinary medicine. After an almost thirty year hiatus where she was far too busy with family and practice to paint, she began studying with the late David Gross. David literally changed her life when after a few art lessons, he sat her down , and said "You could be really good at this if you paint every day". He gave her a key to his studio, and worked with her closely until she moved to her own studio space in Ottawa, Ks. She soon began to teach drawing and painting at the Artzone in Paola, Ks and collaborating with other artists such as Jim Sallenbach, and Kay Tucker .Irene's studio space currently is located in her Airbnb; Parkview Gallery House located in Ottawa, Ks.
